Morning Dog Walk: Exotics, Swarms and That Duck!

** 20% OFF ALL ACRYLIC PRINTS UNTIL MARCH 31ST **

I take a camera along on my Dog Walks to bring you some of the sightings that I see on my morning walks, these photos are rarely going to be great quality as its hard enough keeping an energetic Dog entertained and get close enough to anything. They also help me identify where species are so that I can plan to return.

As I was heading down past “A Rocha” this morning, I heard a flock of Common Waxbills. As soon as they saw an energetic Dog running towards them, they took cover but I did manage to snap these two in our Pear Trees.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen them in this area, so hopefully, they are nesting on “A Rocha”. I will have to be careful clearing any more scrub as they could be building nests in there.

I could hear the Bee Eaters out this morning too, they seem to be congregating on a section of the river further along, this could be where they are planning on building nests this year, a few did fly overhead, but not close enough for photos.

As I got nearer to the river, I saw a lot, loads, of flying insects coming from an old dead piece of Oak. I thought they were Flying Ants, but noticed the antennae was straight and not elbow-shaped. These are Termites, I didn’t even know Portugal had Termites. These Termites had left the nest on mass (they usually do after rain) and will fly away, shed their wings and then look for a mate. This is my understanding, please correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t know too much about bug life.

Once I got down to the River, the Muscovy Duck I spotted yesterday was still present. Yesterday, I identified this as a Female, however, now that I’ve got some close up photos, I think this is indeed a young Male. This has probably escaped from a nearby Farm.
