Morning Dog Walk: A Ladder Snake Basking In The Morning Sun (With Video)

** 20% OFF ALL ACRYLIC PRINTS UNTIL MARCH 31ST **

I take a camera along on my Dog Walks to bring you some of the sightings that I see on my morning walks, these photos are rarely going to be great quality as its hard enough keeping an energetic Dog entertained and get close enough to anything. They also help me identify where species are so that I can plan to return.

Walking in one of my favourite areas with Wally this morning and we spotted a Ladder Snake basking in the sun. I think it had also recently eaten a meal which is maybe why it was in no rush to move away.

Ladder Snake - Cobra-de-escada - Zamenis scalaris

Only the juvenile snakes have the ladder pattern that gives this snake its name and as you can see in adulthood the snake is quite plain except for 2 dark stripes running the length of it’s body. There are also occasional faint dark spots too and usually a dark stripe running behind the eye which I have noticed them to be quite faint here locally.

Ladder Snakes are non-venomous and usually grow to around 120cm in length (sometimes a little longer), this one was around 100cm long and about 3 to 4cm wide.

They will eat rodents and even climb for birds but also will eat lizards and insects.
