Mice at Night in the Garden (Video)

A while ago I noticed a small hole in the ground at the side of one of the Pond Filters in the garden. I’ve been wondering if anything lives in the hole or not.

So, I put a small amount of Bird Seed near the hole and pointed the Bushnell camera at it and left overnight.

Nothing came out of the hole, I just think it’s where there may have been a void below the filter housing and it’s collapsed in. One of the Mice does take a look down inside though and the Bird Food was very much appreciated.

The footage was captured over 7 hours last night. If you look at the Mice, particularly the little nips out their ears you should be able to count 4 different ones visiting.

Starling Murmuration at Rocester, Staffordshire (Video)

I live only a couple of miles from Rocester in Staffordshire, so imagine my surprise when the BBC Midlands Today News broadcast a live report from there about the Starling Murmuration last night.

So as the weather was great today (and I’ve just about recovered from Man Flu that has kept my down all week!) I went up at dusk to see what I could capture.

From some of the photos and videos I’ve seen, the numbers tonight seemed a little down on recent days, however, they still put on a good show.

Nobody really knows why Starlings perform these masterpiece flight shows but it is believed that “strength in numbers” is part of the game. I did see some Sparrow Hawks flying around at the same time.

By the time they started to show in big numbers the light had faded quite a bit and cloud had covered the horizon so no great sunset colours.

I didn’t manage to get many still shots as most of the action was taking place over houses and it was getting too dark to photograph, I switched to a longer lens to try and get inside the Murmuration and got some silhouette shots. I did set up my D7100 to film at the same time (video below).

Using Adobe Lightroom and DxO Optics Pro 10 to Edit An Almost Deleted Photo (Video)

I had a few long distance shots of the Short Eared Owl that, due to high ISO, I almost deleted. They had a fair amount of noise and because I had to crop in, the noise was too much to be able to edit it.

However, I thought I’d let DxO OpticsPro 10 have a go at reducing the noise and as always it delivered. I was so impressed how it cleaned up the noise that I thought I’d show a complete workflow of the post editing.

The video maybe useful for any one else editing, but also may be a good watch for any non-photographers to see how a photo evolves through it’s post processing stage from it’s RAW format to it’s final published copy. For more information on RAW files and post processing, please see a post I made quite a while ago – RAW, JPEG and why Lightroom isn’t Cheating.

Here is the image that the camera captured, it’s a conversion to JPEG without any post processing

Video Footage of a Goldfinch on the Nyger Feeder

Goldfinch
Goldfinch
There are a lot of Goldfinches visiting the garden at the moment, probably due to the 2 Nyger Feeders we have.

So today, I set up the Bushnell Natureview with the 60cm closeup lens attached and positioned it on a tripod 60cm from one of the Nyger Feeders. I was hoping for a Goldfinch on each perch, but of course, that happened on the other feeder! However, I still got some close up footage of a Goldfinch cracking open the Nyger seeds.
