Waxing Gibbous (68%)

As the sky was clear tonight, I thought I’d try a moon shot with the 500mm and teleconverter to see how much quality was lost.

I first tried it with the 2x converter (TC-20eiii) to give a whopping 1000mm but didn’t like the final outcome as I thought it looked too soft. This photo was taken with the 1.7x converter (TC-17eii) and it was a little better.

Milky Way Quite Clear At Home Last Night

Last night I had a comical failure of capturing the International Space Station trail across the night sky.

I knew that the ISS would be eclipsed before it got overhead, but set the shot up to capture the trail between some trees in the garden in the hope I’d get it before it went dark. So I set the camera up and watched the ISS approach with my finger on my (less than £3) remote. Just as the ISS came into the frame, yes, it eclipsed and went dark!

It was a very clear night and I could just about make out the Milky Way over head and wondered how well it would be captured as I’ve never really tried a long exposure from the garden. I live in a quite dark location but the horizons all around have light pollution from the neighbouring towns and cities, however, straight up it’s quite a clean sky. So I pointed the camera straight up between the trees and fired off a few very high ISO shots so that I could get the framing as I liked and then set the camera up for a long exposure and this image is the result.

Not a great shot, but still great considering it’s from the garden.

Waning Gibbous at 93% Visibility

As some may know, I have a fascination of the night sky so you can imagine how gutted I was getting up at 3:30am a few nights back to have quite thick fog obstructing the Super Blood Moon Eclipse. Luckily, I could see the red Moon through the fog quite clearly, however, it wasn’t worth pointing the camera at as it couldn’t pick any detail out.

So tonight with the sky totally clear, I thought I’d try out the Nikon TC-20e III 2x Teleconverter on my Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR II. This Teleconverter takes the lens to a 600mm. Teleconverters are known to loose detail, however, the Nikon ones are known to work very well with the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 lenses and this shot clearly shows that there is still a high amount of quality detail hitting the camera sensor.

This has been cropped in quite tight too. I think the combination of D810, 300mm f/2.8 VR II and TC-20e III is a winner, certainly when it comes to a very bright object like the Moon.

Anyone else think it looks a bit Egg shaped tonight?

Back At Llyn Tegid

I’ve recently come back from another few days at Llyn Tegid (AKA Lake Bala) and was lucky enough to have a clear night on Thursday night. As last time, the Milky Way was very visible to the naked eye which means a DSLR would have a great view!

Here’s a couple of shots I got. It’s a shame the cloud started to come back in on the shot over the lake but didn’t spoil it too much. Night photography is still very much a learning exercise for me and I’ve got a little more practice before I get these perfect.

The first shot, over the lake, you can almost make out the spiral shape of Andromeda, its the bright spot near the top right.

On the 2nd shot (the one above the tree) you can see a shooting star and 2 satellites. The shooting star and one of the satellites is easy to see. The 2nd satellite takes a little finding.

Llyn Tegid After Dark

LLyn Tegid is the actual name of the Lake at Bala, but everyone refers to it as Lake Bala. We went for a couple of nights this weekend and took the camera in the hope that the sky would be clear as there is very little light pollution in the area.

As you can see from the photos, during Dusk (towards the end of Astronomical Dusk hence the blue tinge) there was lot of cloud cover, however, as you can see from the clear Milky Way shot, after midnight, the clouds cleared and the view of the sky was just fantastic.

Perseids Meteors from Mam Tor

I have a fascination with the night sky and I think it’s all about seeing somewhere I’ll never get to visit. So, last night I dragged my other half to the Peak District and walked up the steep path to the summit of Mam Tor with reclining deck chairs, the D810 with 14-24mm and Tripod to watch and hopefully capture some of the meteors.

The Peak District is classed as a Dark Sky area, but to be honest, with the likes of Manchester and Sheffield not too far away, it’s not that dark hence the orange glow on the clouds. However, I’m pretty pleased with the outcome of this shot capturing 3 of the meteors in a 25 second exposure.
