My New Column In The Algarve Resident – White Storks

Here is the news, literally……

I mentioned there was a reason I was in Silves last weekend photographing the White Storks, it was due to a new venture for me. Every month, I will be submitting a Nature Column to the Algarve Resident.

For those that donĀ“t know, the Algarve Resident is a localised version of the Portugal Resident, a weekly English Newspaper available in Portugal, it is available in most newsagents and supermarkets.

Not in Portugal? DonĀ“t worry, each article will also appear as a blog post here a few weeks after the newspaper publication.

The Smell Of The Algarve Serra Has Returned, But The Rivers Still Have Not

The recent cold spell is over and the daytime temperatures are back in the low 20s, the evenings can still be chilly though. This morning I was out walking the dog and noticed something I’d been missing, the smell of the Esteva, in English it’s called the Gum Rock Rose and its latin name is Cistus ladanifer.

This extremely tough evergreen shrub covers most of the Algarve Serra which is why the hills look green. The plant produces a resin and its this very sticky substance that gives off the amazing smell. As you can see in the photo, there is new growth on the top of this branch. The small leaves are extremely sticky hence the return of the smell. I mentioned “tough”, yes this shrub can withstand extreme drought and requires very little water.

Two Holes Have Appeared On Our Land

We have a grassy (this time of year) bank at the front of our house and recently two holes have appeared near each other.

Two New Holes

The larger of the two holes is about 7cm in diameter and as you can see, quite a lot of excavation work has been carried out.

Larger of the two holes

The smaller one, around 5cm in diameter.

Smaller Hole

Being so close together, I suspect they both lead to the same place. I’m really not sure what has built these, possibly a Field Mouse but the only way to find out is to put the Bushnell NatureView camera there and see what happens during the day and night.

Hopefully, will have some video footage to share soon.

My 500mm F/4 Is Finally Back From Nikon!

Almost 4 months ago, disaster struck when the tripod collar snapped on my Nikon 500mm f/4, my main weapon for my wildlife photography (see post here).

Once I found out how to get it to Nikon from Portugal, it eventually made itĀ“s way to NikonĀ“s service centre in Barcelona where it has seemed to take a lifetime to return.

Yesterday, I had the call from FNAC (Electronics shop and Nikon dealer) that it was ready for collection!

As it’s been serviced, I’m just performing an Auto Focus Fine Tune using Reikan FoCal and good to go! First stop, to try and find the Short Eared Owl I spotted locally.
