My 500mm F/4 Is Finally Back From Nikon!

Almost 4 months ago, disaster struck when the tripod collar snapped on my Nikon 500mm f/4, my main weapon for my wildlife photography (see post here).

Once I found out how to get it to Nikon from Portugal, it eventually made it´s way to Nikon´s service centre in Barcelona where it has seemed to take a lifetime to return.

Yesterday, I had the call from FNAC (Electronics shop and Nikon dealer) that it was ready for collection!

As it’s been serviced, I’m just performing an Auto Focus Fine Tune using Reikan FoCal and good to go! First stop, to try and find the Short Eared Owl I spotted locally.

How I Built My Simple DIY Photography Hide

A few weeks ago, my pop-up hide that I placed at the Oasis got blown away by very strong winds during a storm. Luckily it got caught up on a fence about 50 meters away so I was able to recover it.

I didn’t put it back in place and decided that I would build a more permanent solution. Yesterday afternoon, I got to work on making a simple and cheap hide. All of the materials where left overs from the previous owners of our house, so actually cost nothing to make.

I used fence posts as the supports for the hide, using an old garden chair to gauge the size.

Next I cut to size some pieces of timber to hold the structure together. These are also used to staple the outer material later.

Introducing The Oasis

No, it’s not a re-group of the 90s rock band but a section of our land behind the house that always seems to have water.

Water Trickle

We live on top of a hill, however, there always seems to be water on a section of the land behind the house, even in the hot, dry summer there is evidence of water. There are a few theories; Does our Water Cistern (we have a bore hole) leak? Does our Septic Tank release the clean water here? Does it take the water from the roof guttering here? Is there some strange water spring?

No matter how this water gets here, it creates a fantastic Oasis of wild plants. I’ve noticed that this time of year, the returning winter birds congregate for breakfast just after sunrise. Numerous Finches, Robins, Waxbill, Chiffchaff, Stonechat to name a few feast on the flower seeds and insects.

Disable the Windows 10 Lock Screen (Video)

Although not really Photography related, I thought I’d share with you how I disabled the Lock Screen in Windows 10.

In Windows 10, the Lock Screen is displayed when you first boot up where you have to press a key or a mouse button to continue to the login screen. This is also the case if you Sign Out of Windows.

Both my PC and Laptop are fitted with SSD drives, therefore, they boot very quickly just a few seconds. It was annoying me that you have this extra step before login.

The video explains how to disable the Lock Screen in both Home and Pro Versions. Some details are also found below the video.

500mm F/4 Repair Update – Finally At Nikon!

Nikon 500mm f/4 VR
You may remember my unfortunate (almost in tears) incident resulting in my 500mm Tripod Collar breaking (see here for all related blogs).

Finally, I received the call I’ve been waiting for, Nikon are able to repair it. Not only this but they are also repairing the “engine” which I assume they mean the motor as they have stated that it’s a little “cansado”, Portuguese for tired. Hopefully, within around 20 days, I will have my main weapon of my arsenal back. At the right time too as the winter visiting birds are starting to arrive.

Adobe Lightroom: Big Changes Ahead!

It’s no hidden fact that Adobe has been pushing for Cloud based dominance in the Photo Post-Production world and this news really shows for the hard work behind the scenes. Will I like and use it? Maybe not, but at least (for now) there is still the good old way.

Adobe has announced that the “All-New” Lightroom CC will be very much a cloud based solution with Apps designed to work seamlessly cross-platform whether that be Desktop, Mobile, Web or even a bit of all of them.
