Simple Sunset, Very Algarve

As you may know, I like a good silhouette shot, whether it shows an animal or object, providing you can easily recognise the subject it can be very powerful.

I was hoping for a great sunset tonight, the high icy clouds (hinting that the forecast rain for tomorrow is coming) looked promising, however, some heavy clouds started to roll in just as the sun was setting. There was however, a brief period where the sky started to glow, it didn’t last long, but I came up with a simple plan. Photograph a neighbours very Algarvian chimney against the colourful sky.

Standing a long way away and using a long lens I could blur out the gathering clouds but still use the small compressed (due to a long lens) portion of sky to use as a colourful backdrop.

The result is a simple photo, but one that is instantly identified by anyone who can recognise an Algarve Chimney.

Sunset at Farol de Alfanzina

This shoot was probably my most challenging sunset yet. I wanted to shoot the Farol de Alfanzina (Alfanzina Lighthouse) but also be able to capture the rays of beam. I spent around 3 hours on the cliff to the east of the Lighthouse yesterday afternoon as I prepared the shoot (more information about the shot below).

Should you wish to purchase a print, it is already available in the shop!

Sunset Session At Burgau

Another location ticked off! I was shooting a drone video for my Real Estate venture (FotoSul) on Friday in Burgau and decided to wait until sunset to capture another wish list shot. The weather was fantastic, almost too fantastic as I like a little cloud in my sunset shots but the colours were yet again amazing. I set myself up on the cliff overlooking the village and shot both sunset and dusk. If you like them, they are already available to purchase in the Web Shop

The village of Burgau is a little treasure, although on the South Coast, it is well away from the busy tourist resorts.

December Sunset At Carvoeiro

I have been wanting to shoot from this iconic Algarve viewpoint for a while and as I will be at the Christmas Fair at The Smokehouse & Tapas Bar in Carvoeiro on Sunday I thought it a good idea to have a local photograph to include in the display.

This evening I arrived early to setup for a “2nd Sunset” (the colourful sky after the sun has set) shot, but the clouds started rolling in so changed my plan for an actual sunset shot instead.

If you want to see this image in print and mounted, please come along on Sunday.

Glossy Ibis At Salgados

Salgados has a large number of Glossy Ibis currently, certainly in the hundreds if not more. However, the majority of them start heading a short distance west to their roosting grounds around an hour before sunset. This daily migration continues until sunset.

Here is one of the last flocks to leave whilst I was there a few days ago. Glossy Ibis in Portugal is a huge success story as they were a very rare bird just over 10 years ago and now the numbers are huge and increasing. More details soon as I will be writing next months article in the Algarve Resident all about these stunning birds. Not sure what they look like? Take a look Here.
