Misty Sunrise

A few weeks ago, I was up before sunrise to get some mist filled valley shots but the mist was just too thick, you may remember this post.

I stumbled across another photo which at the time I didn’t like so never published anywhere, however, I have now changed my mind and here it is. The sun was rising to the right of the photo causing a purple haze to shine through the mist. The trees are Cork Oak and you can see where the bark has been harvested at the bottoms.

Morning Dog Walk: Rock Bunting On “The Rock”

I take a camera along on my Dog Walks to bring you some of the sightings that I see on my morning walks, these photos are rarely going to be great quality as its hard enough keeping an energetic Dog entertained and get close enough to anything. They also help me identify where species are so that I can plan to return.

This morning, although I saw a lot of birds, I didn’t manage to photograph anything, probably down to the after effects of the local Labour Day (1st May) celebrations yesterday!

However, on the way back past “A Rocha” I saw a pair of birds hopping along the exposed rock almost perfectly blending in. I managed to quickly get a shot of this one before it took cover in the Esteva plants. It was a Rock Bunting, this is a new sighting for me, first time I’ve seen one. They are resident all year round here in the Algarve and as the name suggests prefer the rocky terrain that the Algarve Serra has to offer. Difficult to tell from the photo, but I suspect this is a male due to the black definition on the head. The females are usually a litter duller.

Spot The Difference – Esteva Flowers

Last year someone told me that there are two different variants of the Esteva plant (Portuguese name, not to be confused with the Stevia plant), commonly known in English as the Gum Rockrose. It was mentioned that there is a version that has no spots. I had never seen one until this morning, I’m certainly no plant expert, but it’s great when you stumble across something new.

The scientific name for the Esteva is Cistus ladanifer and the two sub-species are ladanifer and sulcatus. The landanifer has the purple markings where the sulcatus does not, however, they appear to be identical plants.

Morning Dog Walk: A Few Small Birds And A Lot Of Turtles

Firstly, happy May Day to everyone that celebrates it, here in Portugal, it’s a big day and we’ll be off to the local Barragem for a day of food and drink with the locals!

This morning, there was an unmistakable bird song coming from high up in a tree, a Melodious Warbler was singing it’s heart out.

French Lavender Has Enjoyed The Wet Spring

Did I mention that we’ve had a bit of rain in the Algarve this spring? I may have slipped it in on a few occasions!

Well, the wild flowers have enjoyed this unusual persistent deluge and none more so than the French Lavender. Not only is there far more than usual, the flowers are huge and is creating a stunning purple carpet across the landscape.

Fluffy Bee Eater

Here is another photo from my Bee Eater session a couple of days ago.

This photo is him fluffing up his feathers. Birds do this after preening to shake off any debris they have removed.
