The Unmistakable Colours Of The European Bee-Eater Backlit By The Sunset

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestmail

Almost every evening the now re-grouped huge colony of European Bee-Eaters arrive around the Quinta, they are taking an easy meal from nearby Honey Bee Hives.

They are always west of the Quinta which means they are beautifully back-lit by the setting sun.

Today, I was waiting with a camera and grabbed a shot of one landing with a catch. Just look how the sun is shining through the feathers!

Backlit Thistle Seeds In The Warm December Sun

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestmail

If you live in the Algarve, you’ll know that after quite a damp November, December has so far been amazing with temperatures reaching low 20s during day. This morning whilst out walking Wally I came across an area of Thistles where the angle of the sun was perfectly backlighting the bright white seeds. It created a magical photograph, the Bokeh (the term meaning pleasing out of focus areas) circles are created by light reflecting from other nearby Thistles.

Backlit Short Eared Owl

This photo of a Shortie is taken into the Sunrise. It wasn’t too long after the sun had come above the tree line (just to the right of shot). The camera’s light meter is taking it’s reading from the light around the Owl. The light shinning through it’s wings was very bright which results in the camera underexposing the Owl add that to the -1 stop of exposure I had dialled in making the shot even darker and giving this backlit effect. Of course, post editing in Lightroom was needed to give the final effect.
