Wildboar in our Woodland (Video)

A few evenings ago I was outside late at night as I tend to do to either listen to the wildlife (Owls, Toads, Frogs, Crickets) or look at the dark night sky. I could hear rustling and snapping twigs in a piece of Woodland that we own.

I immediately thought Wild Boar.

I’ve not had time to explore this dense woodland yet so grabbed the Bushnell camera and took a ramble. The Woodland is on a steep small hillside with a seasonal brook at the bottom and I could see evidence of activity in abundance. A lot of moved soil and some scat. It was looking very promising that Wild Boar are in residence.

I attached the Bushnell in a small opening. This morning I checked the camera and came up a winner.

It’s a very short clip as the Wild Boar is just walking by, but proof enough that they live in there.

I will be setting up the Bushnell in various positions in the hope I get some more footage of them. In the future I hope to set up a hide in the woodland, but the Wild Boar are usually sleeping in deep cover in the daytime.

Of course, photography isn’t the only shooting pastime and these Wild Boar are of interest to the local Hunters. I have very mixed feelings about hunting, but at these Wild Boars are hunted as a food source which keeps the local economy turning over.

Supermoon from Portugal

Finally! I’ve managed to pick the camera up since moving to Portugal! It was a rush to get in the right spot (even though it’s in the land next to ours!).

I couldn’t turn down the Supermoon. It’s not the greatest quality shot but considering it was a bit of a rush to set everything up, I’m just happy to have a photo to show.

The photo is made up from 2 separate shots of the scene. One focused and metered on the Moon and the other on the landscape with a remote flash to light the ruin. A camera can’t capture a shot like this in one photo like the human eye can see it, so it’s the only way to capture it. The 2 shots have then been merged in Photoshop.

You may have noticed that it’s been a little quiet recently as posts and photos have sizzled out.

There is a reason for this and it’s not because I’ve lost my photo-mojo. Myself and partner Emma, along with her father, are relocating from the UK to Portugal permanently.

For me personally, it gives me the opportunity to take my photography to another level and once established in the Algarve I will be looking at spending a lot of time photographing the fantastic nature and wildlife that Portugal has to offer. The awesome Algarve Coast, the amazing sunsets, the stunning bird life, the dark skies and amazing landscape will all be in the lens.

We are now getting close to our move date and hopefully will be back soon with some amazing captures Portugal has to offer!

Rush Hour at the Feeders

Just as an experiment, I pointed the camera at one our feed areas in the garden and set it to take a photo every 5 seconds. I left the camera for about an hour. Then I selected 60 shots and merged them to create this single shot. The sun was a bit too strong and still high in the sky, so the photo is a bit washed out, but not bad for an experiment.

It just goes to show how busy the feeders are!

Common Toad Waiting in Ambush

Just had a great few minutes watching a Common Toad wedged between 2 rocks in the garden ambushing any Beetles in his range.

I grabbed the camera but as I was only working with light from my garden flood light it was difficult to get a pin sharp photo due to his throat movement and no chance of a tongue out ambush shot.

Linnets spotted in the garden

Over the last week I’ve spotted a pair of Linnets in the garden. Our back garden is mainly surrounded by Hawthorn seperating us from farmland so the perfect habitat for many birds including Linnets.

Today I spotted just the male frequenting the electric cable that feeds our house. As the sun was setting I decided to stick the camera out of an upstairs window to get a shot of him. As a complete fluke, he hopped on top of the Hawthorn right in my line of sight and a perfect angle to the setting sun.

I had a 1.4x teleconverter attached to my 500mm f/4 so expected a small amount of sharpness drop-off but still a shot I’m happy with.

There is no sign of the female, but it’s only the female that sits on the nest, so hopefully he’s just keeping lookout and bringing her food.
