Another Beautiful Sunset, Briefly

Blink and you would have missed this stunning view this evening. As the sun started to set a few clouds rolled in and just for about 5 minutes the colours were amazing before the sun dropped below the clouds and the colours dimmed.

The first photo, I was out trying to photograph some of the Robins that have re-appeared for the winter and therefore had the wrong lens fitted, but a quick dash inside to change the lens and grab a tripod, I got the 2nd photo just before the scene faded out.

Young Cork Oak at Sunset

It’s been another hot day here in the Northern Hills with the temperature reaching 35 degree, the clear skies looked promising for a typical Algarve sunset. I headed to a nearby ridge to find a Cork Oak to photograph against the setting sun. I found this young Cork Oak that is yet to have its first harvest of Cork. The tree needs to be at least 30 years old before the first harvest is carried out.

I liked the way its canopy framed the setting sun so set up the camera and waited until the sun was just disappearing behind the Benafátima ridge. The distant peak you can see to the left of the tree trunk is Fóia, the Algarve’s highest point.

The Sun Was Trying To Hide This Morning!

I was awake at around sunrise this morning, I looked out of the bedroom window, which faces south, and couldn’t understand why the sky looked grey, but there wasn’t a cloud in my view. So I moved to the Northern side of the house and it was a different view completely.

We are having hot air coming over from Africa currently with temperatures yesterday reaching 43 degrees, it could get even higher over the next few days with rumor of it reaching 50! This warm air is also bringing dust and combined with a small cloud masking the sun, I could see an amazing sunrise coming.

Still in my “Oscar the Grouch” bed shorts (maybe too much info!) I grabbed a camera, lens and tripod and headed outside. Just a few moments later, this was the stunning view!

Lunar Eclipse 27 July 2018

I remember the first time I saw a Lunar Eclipse (or at least the first time I remember seeing one!), it was on my first holiday to the Algarve which was over 30 years ago!

Although we had full visibility tonight, I was concerned that because the Eclipse started before Moon rise which was during dusk, the sky might be too bright for photography. However, I got to the top of nearby ridge and waited…..and waited…..and waited. It was a long time after Moon rise that it had risen in the sky enough to be visible here in the hills. Luckily, the sky had darkened a little too, however, not enough for a single shot. So the shot below is a merge of 2 photos taken with different exposures to ensure the moon is bright enough contrasted against the silhouetted ridge.

Sunset at the Barragem de Odelouca

Normal weather has returned to the Algarve over the last few days (will it last is the big question) so I decided to find a new spot to photograph the sunset. Using the PhotoPills App, I found a spot on the side of the Barragem de Odelouca (Odelouca Reservoir) where the sun would be setting on the far side of the water.

This location was very remote and took about 20 minutes of dirt track to reach. I was hoping to find something interesting to place in the foreground such as an old tree or rocks, however, the banks here are very steep and just dropped into the water. This is one issue going to an unknown location. I decided to try to use light shining off a bank and a large rocky island instead. Myself and Emma took along some wine and enjoyed the sundown whilst taking the photos.

The first photo was 20 minutes before sunset just as the sun was falling behind the hills.
