Perseid Meteor Shower 2021

I have a great amphitheatre for the annual Perseid Meteor Shower, a nice open terrace with a panoramic view North to East. It’s not the best location to photograph them, however, I set the camera up to capture 15 second exposures constantly for 3 hours whilst I lay on a sunbed in the warm night air with a beer or two and watched the skies. I occasionally moved the camera so that it would take into account of the movement of the constellation Perseus which is where most of the streaks are coming from and where the name Perseids is taken from.

Here is a composite photograph with the the first image used as the base photo and then any streak captured overlaid because of course, the stars move. The very bright streak in the bottom left looks more like an Iridium Flare from a satellite rather than a meteor. This is when the sunlight reflects off a satellite surface causing a bright flash that can last a few seconds.

Sunset Session At The Beach!

I keep telling myself that I don’t take enough Seascape shots so whilst I was in Balaia Golf Resort on the weekend taking (Real Estate Shots, I decided to head to Praia de São Rafael for the sunset.

I arrived well before sunset to also use the opportunity to take some product shots of my new Photography Bean Bags which will be launched later today!

Of course, after living here for over 2.5 years, even though the temperatures were mid 20s, it was a nice surprise to see people sunbathing and even swimming in the sea! Soon enough the sun started to lower in the sky and most of the sun-cravers started to leave the beach and replaced by sunset watchers. I set myself up near the iconic rock in the centre of the beach and waited. The result of the session was the following 4 photographs which are shown below in time order. All are available in print in the Shop, please see individual links below each image.

Sunset Turned The River Red

March has been pretty wet, very wet, but yesterday was a typically Portuguese Spring day, warm and sunny. I thought that there was going to be a nice sunset so headed down to a section of the Odelouca River in hope a red sky would reflect on the water.

It paid off, not an amazing fiery sky that we had the day before, but enough to reflect in the water. So I placed a Circular Polariser (or Polarizer) filter on to bring out the colours and help with the water and shot with a slow shutter speed to give the river a silky looking effect.

Agitaçao Maritima – Rough Seas!

Storm Emma has had a big influence on the high tides causing a lot of damage to the beaches, boardwalks and eateries along the Southern Algarve Coastline. The IPMA (Portuguese Met Office) had yellow alert in force for “Agitaçao Maritima” which translates to Rough Seas.

Yesterday I visited two beaches to take a look for myself, and whilst destructive, I wanted to capture the beauty of these rough seas. First was Praia Arrifes near Guia which has 3 rock structures called “Três Penecos”, the high tide was retreating and battering the rocks. The fast moving water was ideal for a long exposure, so with both an ND64 and ND8 combined with a Circular Polariser, I was able to capture this photo.

The Current Stormy Weather

Storm Emma might have made its way north, but the Algarve still has a lot of stormy weather. Heavy rain, thunder and strong winds is bringing a much-needed change to the countryside.

I have just been down the river to try to capture the water, wind and sky in one shot. With an ND64 and Circular Polariser fitted I captured this long exposure to try to show the force of the river flowing, the dark fast-moving clouds and the trees blowing in the gusts. As you can see, not the usual bright colourful photos I’m used to taking in the Algarve!
