Changing Adobe Lightroom Keyboard Shortcuts In Windows (Video)

NOTE! Since the 8.3.1 update the folder name has changed where listed as “Lightroom Classic CC” it is now “Lightroom Classic”!

I had a problem, both my Laptop and Desktop run Windows 10 with United Kingdom Region settings but have the Portuguese Keyboard Layouts. Within Lightroom (and indeed Photoshop) I rely on the Keyboard shortcuts to increase and decrease both the Adjustment Brush and Spot Tool. By default, this is the [ and ] keys.

However, look where they are on a Portuguese Keyboard.

Portuguese Keyboard

To use the square brackets, you are required to press the alt gr key. In Lightroom both alt keys switches the brush to the Erase brush so I lost these keyboard shortcuts. Adobe give you the option to change the keys within Photoshop, but even today they still do not include this option in Lightroom. There is a way to do this on a Mac and I´ve seen 3rd party software available to purchase on Windows but I couldn’t help thinking that there must be configuration files included with Lightroom for various regions around the globe to cater for the differing keyboard layouts so had a dig around the installation directory. I came up a winner with an easy way to re-assign the shortcuts.

Introducing The Oasis

No, it’s not a re-group of the 90s rock band but a section of our land behind the house that always seems to have water.

Water Trickle

We live on top of a hill, however, there always seems to be water on a section of the land behind the house, even in the hot, dry summer there is evidence of water. There are a few theories; Does our Water Cistern (we have a bore hole) leak? Does our Septic Tank release the clean water here? Does it take the water from the roof guttering here? Is there some strange water spring?

No matter how this water gets here, it creates a fantastic Oasis of wild plants. I’ve noticed that this time of year, the returning winter birds congregate for breakfast just after sunrise. Numerous Finches, Robins, Waxbill, Chiffchaff, Stonechat to name a few feast on the flower seeds and insects.

Disable the Windows 10 Lock Screen (Video)

Although not really Photography related, I thought I’d share with you how I disabled the Lock Screen in Windows 10.

In Windows 10, the Lock Screen is displayed when you first boot up where you have to press a key or a mouse button to continue to the login screen. This is also the case if you Sign Out of Windows.

Both my PC and Laptop are fitted with SSD drives, therefore, they boot very quickly just a few seconds. It was annoying me that you have this extra step before login.

The video explains how to disable the Lock Screen in both Home and Pro Versions. Some details are also found below the video.

Coming Soon – Photography Workshops, free places will be available!

Photography Workshops

You may have noticed a new option in the menu taking you to a new page, Photography Workshops.

All the information you need (for now) is in the page, but in a nutshell, I’m planning 1 day Photography Workshops up here in the hills of the Algarve. These small-sized attendee workshops will teach the basics of photography along with a more advanced workshop coming further down the road.

The workshops will be a mixture of classroom theory and practical sessions. They are being planned to be as hands-on as possible including getting around the village (São Marcos da Serra) practising.

[Update to below] This post was before the workshops became active, therefore, the free sessions are no longer available.

Before I launch the workshops, I’ll need to run one, possibly two, test workshops to confirm timings and content. These will be offered free-of-charge, if you are interested in attending one of these “Beta” workshops, then please register your interest by Contacting Me (first-come, first served).
