How Lens Diaphragm Blades Control the Aperture (Video)

I setup the Lightbox today to make a quick video on how the diaphragm blades control the amount of light allowed through to the sensor (or film) inside the camera. This is to be part of my Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshop.

Tutorial: Lightroom Classic CC Basics – Moving Photos Between Lightroom & Photoshop (Video)

This video is the first in a series of Lightroom Classic CC Basic Tutorials that I’ll be publishing over the next few weeks and months.

These video tutorials are aimed at both newcomers and intermediate levels of Lightroom and give an insight into some of the basics.

In this episode I show you how easy is it to move photos from Lightroom into Photoshop for further editing and back again to Lightroom.

How I Built My Simple DIY Photography Hide

A few weeks ago, my pop-up hide that I placed at the Oasis got blown away by very strong winds during a storm. Luckily it got caught up on a fence about 50 meters away so I was able to recover it.

I didn’t put it back in place and decided that I would build a more permanent solution. Yesterday afternoon, I got to work on making a simple and cheap hide. All of the materials where left overs from the previous owners of our house, so actually cost nothing to make.

I used fence posts as the supports for the hide, using an old garden chair to gauge the size.

Next I cut to size some pieces of timber to hold the structure together. These are also used to staple the outer material later.

Don’t Forget The Supermoon Tonight!

Just a quick reminder that tonight (Sunday 3rd December) there will be a Full Moon, it’s also called the Cold Moon as it’s the first Full Moon of the winter. Also, as the Full Moon is at its closest distance to the Earth (357,495 km!) it’s 2017’s one and only Supermoon.

Here in the Algarve, the Moon is due to rise 18 minutes after sunset but 10 minutes before Civil Dusk.

Sunset: 17:16
Moonrise: 17:34
Civil Dusk: 17:44

This should hopefully give the sky a nice colour and may even provide a purple hue giving the bright white Moon (or it could rise a red/orange colour) a stunning backdrop. We have clear skies forecast and I hope to photo the Moon rising above the Mountain ridges here in the Algarve Serra.

Wherever you are, if you’re lucky enough to have clear skies, remember to get out to watch and even photograph! Hopefully, I’ll have a photo for you later.

If you are getting out to photograph it, here’s a quick tip: Use a long focal length to squash the perspective, it will make the Moon look bigger.

Here’s a photo from the last Supermoon rising above an old ruined building on the 14th November 2016. I used a 300mm lens to capture the ruin in the distance with the Moon behind giving the same visual impression your eyes have. If I was close to the ruin with a wide lens, the Moon would appear smaller and further in the distance.

Changing Adobe Lightroom Keyboard Shortcuts In Windows (Video)

NOTE! Since the 8.3.1 update the folder name has changed where listed as “Lightroom Classic CC” it is now “Lightroom Classic”!

I had a problem, both my Laptop and Desktop run Windows 10 with United Kingdom Region settings but have the Portuguese Keyboard Layouts. Within Lightroom (and indeed Photoshop) I rely on the Keyboard shortcuts to increase and decrease both the Adjustment Brush and Spot Tool. By default, this is the [ and ] keys.

However, look where they are on a Portuguese Keyboard.

Portuguese Keyboard

To use the square brackets, you are required to press the alt gr key. In Lightroom both alt keys switches the brush to the Erase brush so I lost these keyboard shortcuts. Adobe give you the option to change the keys within Photoshop, but even today they still do not include this option in Lightroom. There is a way to do this on a Mac and I´ve seen 3rd party software available to purchase on Windows but I couldn’t help thinking that there must be configuration files included with Lightroom for various regions around the globe to cater for the differing keyboard layouts so had a dig around the installation directory. I came up a winner with an easy way to re-assign the shortcuts.
