It started off quite a difficult task this year with the Kingfishers. The river level was a little lower than usual in late spring which didn’t provide the correct angles I was looking for with my perched portraits. It wasn’t until the juveniles left the nests that I was able to shoot at the correct angles. It really was a waiting game, which paid off.
The local Kingfishers bred very successfully this year and I had some amazing sessions with them. All my favourite photos follow below. Most of these photos and others are available to purchase in print in the Webshop.
Clicking each photo will open up the product in the shop. I am slowly updating the shop to include these prints framed. All Kingfisher photos are now available framed! To celebrate my the Kingfisher success, all Kingfisher prints (including framed) have been discounted until the end of September!
Please note, currently all framed prints are available for local pickup only and can be viewed (by appointment only) in my viewing gallery here at the Quinta. I can also meet and greet in the central Algarve area!
The reason for this mega-post is that I have now finished this years project to photograph Kingfisher portrait shots and this is mainly due to the water levels of the pools left after the river dries.
As you can see from this morning’s dog walk, there is little water remaining.
There is still plenty of these pools and they are still stocked quite well with small fish and Crayfish, but now, the angles for photography are not the best. Here is a photo to show how much these pools have dried. This perch is the one used in the photo above and when I installed it the water was about 30cm deep. You can just about see bird poo on the floor, the Kingfishers still choose to perch here, also the Iberian Magpies do too.
So what happens next? Well, the local wildlife will continue to rely on these pools for food and hopefully the food source will last until we have sufficient rainfall in autumn to start the river flowing again. If not, the Kingfishers will move downstream in search of food which has happened in previous years, they usually return once the rivers start flowing again. The Otters are still present and taking their food of Crayfish from these pools, here is a fresh spraint I spotted this morning.
So here are all my favourite shots this year, click on each photo to open in the shop!
I had 3 seperate perches and hide locations this year, the first was the perch shown in the photo above which was on a wide open section of river.
My 2nd perch and hide location was a large and deep pool where the Kingfishers struggled to dive from high tree branches, not only did this perch enable me to shoot some amazing shots, but also gave the Kingfishers a help!
This final perch I wanted to try something different to create a stunning contrast. My “Dark Perch”, it was in a section of overgrown river that was full of fish.
So there we have my collection of Common Kingfisher shots for this year. I will be watching and probably taking more photos of these amazing birds if the opportunity arises and of course, once the river is flowing again, I will be back with more!
With regards to framed prints, the shop is slowly being updated to include the option for all prints to be framed. The frames are wooden with FSC certification (www.fsc.org) and have glass fronts. If required custom mount boards are cut to size.
Here are the 4 colours of frame available in both 50x40cm (A3 mounted print) and 40x30cm (A4 mounted print)
