Honey Bee & French Lavender Backlit By The Morning Sun

I’ve been so carried away with all the activities of Springtime that I have not taken any “Artmospheric” shots lately. Yes, that’s a word I made up! So this morning I waited patiently at this French Lavender Flower that was nicely backlit by the sun with a great dark canvas provided by a distant Eucalyptus Tree that was in the shade.

I didn’t have to wait too long (thankfully for Wally’s sake who was getting bored!) until a Honey Bee turned up and managed to shoot this photo. This has kicked started me to take more “Artmospheric” shots and hope to bring you more soon!

Morning Dog Walk: Female European Stonechat In The Morning Sun

I take a camera along on my Dog Walks to bring you some of the sightings that I see on my morning walks, these photos are rarely going to be great quality as its hard enough keeping an energetic Dog entertained and get close enough to anything. They also help me identify where species are so that I can plan to return.

Whilst walking Wally this morning a Female European Stonechat was sitting on a fence post backlit by the rising sun.

Backlit Thistle Seeds In The Warm December Sun

If you live in the Algarve, you’ll know that after quite a damp November, December has so far been amazing with temperatures reaching low 20s during day. This morning whilst out walking Wally I came across an area of Thistles where the angle of the sun was perfectly backlighting the bright white seeds. It created a magical photograph, the Bokeh (the term meaning pleasing out of focus areas) circles are created by light reflecting from other nearby Thistles.

Meet Wally

Time to introduce the new member to our household, meet Wally.

We rescued Wally from a busy two-lane road he was wandering right down the middle of, against the rush hour traffic. No collar, no Micro-chip and the all-clear from our vets resulted in us keeping him. Our vet (and a few other people) think he was probably abandoned either because he’s not small and cute anymore (well at 7 months old, I still think he is!) or a failed Hunter’s Dog. Although getting better, both scenarios are still common in Portugal.

Expect to see a lots of photos, he’s a very willing (sometimes) model and great for practice snapping. Here are some photos against the back-lit sunrise this morning.

Backlit Short Eared Owl

This photo of a Shortie is taken into the Sunrise. It wasn’t too long after the sun had come above the tree line (just to the right of shot). The camera’s light meter is taking it’s reading from the light around the Owl. The light shinning through it’s wings was very bright which results in the camera underexposing the Owl add that to the -1 stop of exposure I had dialled in making the shot even darker and giving this backlit effect. Of course, post editing in Lightroom was needed to give the final effect.
