Sunset captured on my Samsung Galaxy S8+

I’m not much of a mobile phone shooter, but tonight’s sunset was stunning due to a few clouds. Rather than run for my DSLR, I thought I’d try out a challenging photo for a mobile phone camera. This scene would be challenging to a mobile camera due to the large differences in very bright and dark areas. This dynamic range is something that a small lens and sensor in a mobile struggles with. As you can see, the result is pretty good considering.

This photo was shot on my Samsung Galaxy S8+. The camera was in “Pro” mode and saved as a RAW (DNG) file. I set the exposure on the bright sunset and also dialled in -1 compensation, I then finished up with some post work in Lightroom.

Sunset from the border of the Algarve and Alentejo

This last week we had a visit from my sister (and family) and whilst I was out giving her a tour around the hills, I spotted an abandoned windmill on the top of a ridge and thought it would make a good foreground for a sunset.

This evening, I returned to the windmill just before sundown.

The sunset wasn’t as good as the Algarve can be gifted with, but enough colours to snap a few shots which you can see below;

Summer Sunset Colours Return to the Algarve

June is upon us and the African weather influence has well and truly arrived in the Algarve. Here in the Serra, the temperatures are now consistently above 30 degree Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) every day.

This warm african weather also brings the amazing colours at sunset (and indeed Sunrise). I look forward to getting out at both Sunrise and Sunset to capture some great scenes.

Here’s a quick photo I snapped this evening, a silhouette of the very common Blue Gum Eucalyptus Tree against a stunning sky.

The Blue Gum Eucalyptus covers a lot of Portugal, however, it’s not natural here. It was introduced from Tasmania (yes, these are the ones you see Koala’s hugging) in the 1850’s and as it self-seeds and grows very quickly, it covers large areas.

Sunset Reflection at the Barragem

I’ve been waiting for a perfectly still night and another fantastic red sunset to get down to a local “Bomberios Barragem” to get a reflection shot.

Here in the Serra (hills) of the Algarve you’ll find a lot of these man-made lakes (Bomberios Barregem translates to Firefighter Damn) which are used by fire trucks and helicopters to fill up with water in the event of a local forest fire.

Algarve Serra Sunset

As the sun was starting to drop in the sky this afternoon, there was a slight haze appearing in the cloudless sky.

I had a hunch that this would be the start of a typical stunning Algarve sunset, so I headed for the hills.

I settled on top of a ridge with Monchique and Foia in the distance and waited for the sky to light up.

It didn’t disappoint!

Starling Murmuration at Rocester, Staffordshire (Video)

I live only a couple of miles from Rocester in Staffordshire, so imagine my surprise when the BBC Midlands Today News broadcast a live report from there about the Starling Murmuration last night.

So as the weather was great today (and I’ve just about recovered from Man Flu that has kept my down all week!) I went up at dusk to see what I could capture.

From some of the photos and videos I’ve seen, the numbers tonight seemed a little down on recent days, however, they still put on a good show.

Nobody really knows why Starlings perform these masterpiece flight shows but it is believed that “strength in numbers” is part of the game. I did see some Sparrow Hawks flying around at the same time.

By the time they started to show in big numbers the light had faded quite a bit and cloud had covered the horizon so no great sunset colours.

I didn’t manage to get many still shots as most of the action was taking place over houses and it was getting too dark to photograph, I switched to a longer lens to try and get inside the Murmuration and got some silhouette shots. I did set up my D7100 to film at the same time (video below).
