Algarve Photo Fun Facebook Group Social Meet

We had our first social meet last Saturday of the Algarve Photo Fun Group that I host on Facebook. It was a small gathering at Algar Seco on the cliffs above Carvoerio where we walked and talked photography (and many other things). We even took a few photographs too! Later on, we headed down to the square in Carvoeiro for lunch.

If you have an interest in photography and are also in the Algarve (permanently, visit or even holiday here) come and join the Algarve Photo Fun Facebook Group.

We hope to organise more of these social meets in the future, the next is being discussed right now!

Here are a few photos I snapped.

NEWS: I Now Offer Personal Nature Walks

As probably know I run an occasional free Nature Walks here in the Algarve Hills where everyone is welcome. They are very popular and spaces are limited often meaning people miss out. I have been asked on many occasions if I would run private walks to compliment my free ones.

Well, I can now announce that private Walks are now available. Of course, I cannot run these for free so there is just a small cost of just €10 per person with a minimum charge of €30. To keep these walks personal the maximum group size is 10 people. For example, a group of 8 people is €80 (€10 per person) and a group size of 1, 2 or 3 persons is €30.

More information can be found on the Product Page and please Contact Me for your own private booking.

New Location For A Star Trail Shot Found

This morning I (and Wally!) stumbled across an old and abandoned Well with many of the workings still intact. A quick look on the PhotoPills App confirmed my thoughts that the angle below is exactly north facing.

This means that Polaris (AKA The North Star) is directly above the well. I love to try to include local features in my shots and therefore, I will return for a Star Trail Shot the next time we have a perfectly clear night sky. The only concern is the area also has a lot of evidence of Javali foraging!

The Mystery Bird From Yesterday’s Nature Walk Identified

First all, a big thanks to everyone that turned up yesterday for the first Free Nature Walk of 2019.

What an amazing morning out in the hills, the weather was almost hot, but certainly very warm and there were plenty of things to see. The one thing that got us excited was a dark black/blue bird that appeared a little too far away to ID. At first I thought it was a Starling, but then it stood upright like a Thrush. It disappeared before we managed to get a good view or shot of it and continued our walk. A few names were branded about and I mentioned the possibility of a Blue Rock Thrush. I have never seen one let alone locally to the house.

We continued our walk and the route brought us back past the same location on our return. I spotted it again, this time in full view albeit a long way, it was also now a view directly into the sun.

I snapped a photo but couldn’t tell from the image on the camera. This morning, I have cleaned the image up a little and gives a perfect view, I can now confirm it is indeed a Male Blue Rock Thrush. I visited the same location this morning, but couldn’t spot it but as these birds are resident in Portugal, I will keep an eye out for it and maybe stake out. It is possible that it will nest in this barn that it was spotted at.

Morning Dog Walk: Plenty Of Birds Big And Small

I take a camera along on my Dog Walks to bring you some of the sightings that I see on my morning walks, these photos are rarely going to be great quality as its hard enough keeping an energetic Dog entertained and get close enough to anything. They also help me identify where species are so that I can plan to return.

It was another beautiful and cloudless morning that started off cold before warming up very quickly. On this morning’s Wally Walk, we circled a nearby Barragem (Portuguese for Dam) that is used as a Fire Fighting collection point. There are currently 3 Cormorants resident and also a Grey Heron that sits in the top of large tree.
