An early morning airport run? Never a problem as I’ll always use it to my advantage. This morning I decided to visit Praia dos Arrifes near Albufeira to grab the sunrise.

All day yesterday the cloud was full of high wispy clouds so I headed to Praia do Evaristo to shoot from the amazing rocks that separate it from Praia do Castelo and watch the thicker cloud developing.
It was immediately apparent that the clouds were getting too thick for a colourful sunset, but I continued to shoot at various stages of the sunset knowing that the camera would be capturing colours that were difficult to see with the human eye. Once back at the computer it was amazing to see the photos that was well worth the patience of waiting and shooting.

“There is no bad light. There is spectacular light and difficult light. It’s up to you to use the light you have.” – Quote by Jay Maisel
I plan a lot of shoots in advance, particulary sunrise seascapes. The weather, the sun angle and of course the tide all play an important part for each location. With the dust cloud lingering from Africa it was a gamble this morning if there would be any good light from the sunrise, I suspected not, so had a Plan B to use the conditions in my favour. Some nice long exposures with a “blown out” background. I tried a few angles and positions, but decided that this was the best from the shoot, this really is something different and is available in print in the Web Shop. The location is near Albuferia Marina.
The first sunrise shot of 2022 at Praia dos Arrifes. There is something magical about arriving on a beach in the dark and witnessing dawn turning to sunrise turning to daylight. This morning I experienced just that, I was on the beach in almost complete darkness whilst I set the camera up with the aid of a torch and waited for sunrise.

I keep telling myself that I don’t take enough Seascape shots so whilst I was in Balaia Golf Resort on the weekend taking (Real Estate Shots, I decided to head to Praia de São Rafael for the sunset.
I arrived well before sunset to also use the opportunity to take some product shots of my new Photography Bean Bags which will be launched later today!
Of course, after living here for over 2.5 years, even though the temperatures were mid 20s, it was a nice surprise to see people sunbathing and even swimming in the sea! Soon enough the sun started to lower in the sky and most of the sun-cravers started to leave the beach and replaced by sunset watchers. I set myself up near the iconic rock in the centre of the beach and waited. The result of the session was the following 4 photographs which are shown below in time order. All are available in print in the Shop, please see individual links below each image.
First, the sun just about to dip below the west cliff.
