Friday Flashback: Cozumel Emerald Hummingbird

I have been wanting to re-edit a photo of a Male Cozumel Emerald Hummingbird for sometime. This shot was taken whilst on a holiday visit to the small Mexican island of Cozumel back in 2015 (Read original post…). I was travelling light as it wasn’t a photography trip and at the time I was using a Nikon D810 with the Nikon 80-40mm lens (which is still my walk about lens today). I was doing some tourist guided trip and I did a delinquent teenager act by sneaking away from the walk to photograph these amazing tiny birds.

They can only be found on the island of Cozumel and as you can see are amazing colours and are only 9cm in length!

Holiday Bird Snaps

I thought I’d share a couple of shots that I took whilst out and about on my recent holiday.

This Pelican at Key West on the Florida Keys was just about to dive to catch a fish, on this occasion, I don’t think it caught anything.

Cozumel Sunset

Usually, sunsets in the Caribbean are simply fantastic, however, this year has seen a fair share of cloudy weather in November. One particular day in Cozumel it was hot and sunny but just as sunset was approaching haze and clouds started to build. However, it helped create a different view.

There were a few people out taking photos of the sun just going down, however, a big mistake lots of people make is leaving once the sun has gone below the horizon.

Just 20 minutes later, this was the scene.

Endemic Hummingbirds of Cozumel

I remember watching Hummingbirds on a holiday to Arizona many years ago and ever since I got more involved in photography getting some photos of these tiny birds has been on the must do tick list.

I recently went on holiday in the Caribbean which included a trip around the Mexican island of Cozumel, just off Mexican East coast of Playa Del Carmen.

I was travelling light, with my D810 and 80-400 zoom and walking around a Mayan village when Emma, my other half, spotted them buzzing around a flowering bush. Now was my chance to put another tick on the list.
