Another early alarm clock this morning to head down to one of my favourite childhood memory beaches, Praia do Carvalho. If you have visited this beach you can understand that as a 10 year old in 1984, I thought we had discovered this “Pirate Beach” and nobody else knew about it. Of course, in 1984 there was no development on the cliffs surrounding this beach so really did feel very remote.

Just after sunrise (View Sunrise Photo Here), we (yes, Emma came with me too) headed down onto the beach to capture this photo of the single stack that is present at this amazing beach.

Turmoil Inside An Imperfect Heart

There was a change of plan this morning, I was awake (before the alarm) at 4:30am to head to a location I scouted a few days ago. However, after checking the weather I decided the location was too dangerous due to a large ocean swell as it is on a tiny pebble cove. Therefore, I decided to stay on top of the cliffs and head to the double natural arc near Praia da Marinha. I couldn’t form a perfect heart shape as I wanted to shoot the arches with the sun rising just off to the left of the shot to light the cliffs, so settle for this imperfect shape, once I captured the white water from the swell, the title of “Turmoil Inside An Imperfect Heart” just popped into my head.

Yet again, it was amazing to arrive in darkness and watch the world wake up. This image is available to purchase in print in the Web Shop

Igreja De Nossa Senhora Da Rocha

Whilst I waited for the sun to set for my Christmas Photo, I decided to shoot a photograph when the setting sun was directly behind the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Rocha. For those that are not aware, this is a small church situated right on the end of a small headland near Porches. It is very popular with Algarve weddings.

The Gulls seemed to know exactly where to fly to make the shot even more interesting.

Sunrise At Ponta Da Piedade, Lagos

Ponta da Piedade is a stunning location near Lagos and can be found on the end of the headland, where there is a lighthouse too. The waterside at Ponta da Piedade is reached by what seems like thousands of steps and at 6am in December it is dark, completely dark. Armed with a powerful Mountain Bike LED light I reach the bottom only to be greeted with quite a rough sea. It was too dangerous to stand on the man-made concrete pad so changed my location to slightly higher up than planned. My plans of capturing the first light of the sun peeking around the rock formation was still perfect. As I waited everything became brighter and eventually I was bathed in sunshine capturing this shot which I have titled “Sunlight Arrives”.

More Shots From Alfanzina

As I spent a few hours scouting, planning and waiting for the Night Light – Sunset at Farol de Alfanzina shot a few days ago, I didn’t waste the time and kept watching and waiting for some extra shots.

First up, here is a shot I took in the afternoon, a long time before sunset. I love the way the sun has really brought out the yellow colouring of the cliffs.

This shoot was probably my most challenging sunset yet. I wanted to shoot the Farol de Alfanzina (Alfanzina Lighthouse) but also be able to capture the rays of beam. I spent around 3 hours on the cliff to the east of the Lighthouse yesterday afternoon as I prepared the shoot (more information about the shot below).
