My Digital Photography Fundamental Workshops Are Back – New Venue – New Format!

My Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshops are back and are better than ever!

If there is any positive of the Covid-19 restrictions is that I was able to sit back and re-structure this popular workshop. I listened to your feedback and also my own thoughts.

NEW VENUE
A lot of people asked if I was ever going to host the workshops nearer the south coast rather than here in the hills. I took a while to find the perfect location, but many thanks to Boogie Bounce Portugal, an ideal location has been found.

The new location is Parchal which is near to both Portimão and Lagoa within easy reach of many. Google Map

NEW DAY
Not everybody could make a weekday and therefore, I have moved the workshops to a Saturday!

NEW FORMAT
I couldn’t help notice that over the years many people struggled with the full-day almost bootcamp style format of the workshops and have therefore decided to split the workshops into two parts. Each part is four hours and in the afternoon. The current format is there is a workshop on the 2nd Saturday of every month which alternates between parts one and two. For example, if part one was to fall on the 2nd Saturday of June, then part two would be the 2nd Saturday of July. This gives ample time to practice the skills learnt before the 2nd part.

Spaces are limited to 8 attendees and loan cameras are also available should you require. The cost is just €55 per person.

Booking is already available from November 13th and for all of 2022, BOOK HERE!GIFT VOUCHERS AVAILABLE HERE

Here is the taster video for the workshop…

Does Equipment Matter?

Yes, of course it does……

That’s that then. Well, no, not really. Let’s first talk about Motorsport, if you watch F1 and get excited about the thrill of the drivers balancing the physics of a finely tuned piece of engineering, does that mean that you can’t enjoy a Sunday drive through the countryside in a Ford Fiesta? Of course you can. For me it’s the same with photography.

I’m not going to pretend that shooting with Nikon’s fantastic D850 DSLR paired with a Nikon 500mm f/4 doesn’t make life much easier for me as a photographer, of course it does, but that doesn’t mean that you need this level of equipment to capture stunning photos. Anyone who has attended one of my Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshop will remember that I talk a lot about that although professional equipment offers superior quality, it doesn’t mean that you cannot shoot stunning photographs with level-entry equipment, far from it. I quite often get told “It’s easy for you with your camera”, yes, it’s easier, but doesn’t mean that photography is impossible without expensive equipment.

This morning, it got me thinking about this so I grabbed a Nikon D3100 that I use as a loan camera on my workshops and attached my Nikon 80-400mm lens to it. Yes, ok, some of you are going to spot that this is a professional grade lens, I don’t own a “long” telephoto lens that isn’t. However, it’ll still be possible to get great photos with a much cheaper lens attached.

The Nikon D3100 is a level-entry camera with just 14.2 megapixels and was released back in 2010. Ten years in the world of photography is a long-time!

It didn’t take long until a pair of juvenile Eurasian Nuthatches we have in the garden showed up on an old dead Oak Tree. So here you go, I think you’ll agree that these are quite nice shots of them.

If you work with good light, shoot at the correct angles and of course dial in the correct camera settings then great photography is available.

Currently, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my “Open” Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshops are suspended, however, private sessions are available. These workshops are a great way to learn to take control of your camera.

If you feel like really getting your teeth into photography, a great way to go from beginner to great photographer is to book some Personal 3 Hour Photography Workshop Sessions. These sessions can take you right from the start through to post-processing in Adobe Lightroom at a pace that suits you and as many or little sessions as you wish, these can be done in the comfort of your own home!

Underexpose not Overexpose!

It was just after sunrise (remembering that due to the hills, our sunrise is slightly later than the official one!) and there was a Jay flying from a nearby Oak Tree with an Acorn.

I desperately wanted it to fly the other side of my position but it didn’t, so do I give up, or do I overexpose the shot to try and grab some detail? No, instead, I use the lack of light (in the right place) to my advantage and actually underexpose the shot to capture the back-light and sun shining through the thinner feathers.

This is something we discuss on my Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshop!

A Great Experience At A Practical Workshop At Salgados

I don’t currently advertise it as a service, however if asked, I will organise follow-up practical sessions for past attendees on my Digital Photography Fundamentals Workshop. I will be launching this as a full service shortly though!

This morning I met Joy at Salgados at 8am for a morning session on Bird Photography and we had a great time.

I always find it strange to feel in awe of spotting a European Magpie, in the UK every other bird seems to be one, but in the Algarve they one seem to appear only in certain localities, Salgados is one of those. Almost immediately, one came down to land nearby.
