Snow covered Marchington (Video)

At home, near Marchington in East Staffordshire, we had around 2 inches of snow overnight, so I thought I’d send the DJI Phantom 3 Pro up to capture some of the patchwork fields covered in snow.

Even though the area is quite flat with just the famous “Cliff” in some of the shots, the snow really makes for some stunning scenery. It’s amazing how everything looks almost black and white when snow is on the ground and the sky is overcast. Just a little glimpse of green grass poking through the snow in the fields.

Here’s a short video of some of the footage.

Grumpy Robin

You may have seen Grumpy Cat doing the rounds on the Internet, but this morning I found Grumpy Robin.

Maybe he wasn’t happy that we’ve had a couple of inches of snow. However, he has an abundance of Suet to feed on in the garden!

Happy Christmas!
Happy Christmas!

Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone who visits both the website and my Flickr Albums and wish you all a great Christmas and New Year.

Certainly for me, 2016 will hopefully be brining a new venture to my photography which I’m very excited about! More news on this when things fall into place!

So, right now, I’m off to make some homemade warm Gluhwein and enjoy Christmas. Whatever you’re up to, enjoy!

Holiday Bird Snaps

I thought I’d share a couple of shots that I took whilst out and about on my recent holiday.

This Pelican at Key West on the Florida Keys was just about to dive to catch a fish, on this occasion, I don’t think it caught anything.

Cozumel Sunset

Usually, sunsets in the Caribbean are simply fantastic, however, this year has seen a fair share of cloudy weather in November. One particular day in Cozumel it was hot and sunny but just as sunset was approaching haze and clouds started to build. However, it helped create a different view.

There were a few people out taking photos of the sun just going down, however, a big mistake lots of people make is leaving once the sun has gone below the horizon.

Just 20 minutes later, this was the scene.

TECHNIQUE: Shooting with 2 Eyes Open for More Predictable Tracking

I’ve had a few people comment on my Cozumel Emerald Hummingbird photos and how well I managed to track them and get them in focus. Hummingbirds move fast, very fast and as they are also so tiny it’s really difficult to track and predict where they are going to be. You could just set up focus on one flower and wait, but that’s not what I did so I thought I’d share how I tracked them.

Of course, having a camera and lens that auto-focuses quickly and accurately is going to help, but that’s only half of it as you still have to follow the bird as it flies around at incredible speed.

In theory, there’s a simple technique that can help, in practice, it takes some getting used to;  KEEP BOTH EYES OPEN!
