Early start in hope of Short Eared Owls

After a few failed attempts over the last few weeks, I got up before first light in hope to photograph a known location where Short Eared Owls have been showing well at first and last light.

Just as the sun started to rise above the tree line I wasn’t disappointed.

Whilst waiting, a Vole came scampering straight past where I was standing. I actually muttered something along the lines of “you’d better hide” and suddenly from the other side of the hedge I was backed-up against, a “Shortie” came swooping over. I’m not so sure who was more spooked, me, the Owl or the Vole. The Owl didn’t continue it’s swoop and the Vole survived being eaten.

The promise of clear skies wasn’t looking too great as a large thick cloud covered the sunrise. The Owl perched up in a tree, so I calmly walked towards it a few inches at a time. I got to about 20 metres and decided that was close enough. I quickly attached my 1.4x teleconverter to the 500mm and fired off a few shots.

Grumpy Robin

You may have seen Grumpy Cat doing the rounds on the Internet, but this morning I found Grumpy Robin.

Maybe he wasn’t happy that we’ve had a couple of inches of snow. However, he has an abundance of Suet to feed on in the garden!

Holiday Bird Snaps

I thought I’d share a couple of shots that I took whilst out and about on my recent holiday.

This Pelican at Key West on the Florida Keys was just about to dive to catch a fish, on this occasion, I don’t think it caught anything.

Endemic Hummingbirds of Cozumel

I remember watching Hummingbirds on a holiday to Arizona many years ago and ever since I got more involved in photography getting some photos of these tiny birds has been on the must do tick list.

I recently went on holiday in the Caribbean which included a trip around the Mexican island of Cozumel, just off Mexican East coast of Playa Del Carmen.

I was travelling light, with my D810 and 80-400 zoom and walking around a Mayan village when Emma, my other half, spotted them buzzing around a flowering bush. Now was my chance to put another tick on the list.

Another Sparrow Shot from the Reflection Pool

Here’s another shot from my DIY Reflection Pool.

As it was just a test setup, I’ve dismantled it again now, but will be rebuilding it again soon in a slightly different layout and hopefully a different location to try and get a better background.

Sparrow in a Flap

The Sparrows and Blue Tits are coming to the Reflection Pool. It needs to be modified a little and lowered as I can’t use my popup hide as it’s too high. However, I did get this shot by leaving the camera on a tripod and firing the shutter remotely.

It’s not a perfect picture as I’d rather have a larger Depth of Field as the front log isn’t in focus, but the Sparrows head is (almost) in focus.

This Sparrow as a bit of a strange tuft on it’s head too, almost like it’s raising an eyebrow.
