Bad light didn’t stop the fish jumping (including video)

I took a visit to Norbury Weir on the River Dove which is right on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border north of Uttoxeter. I was there watch the Atlantic Salmon and Sea Trout making their way as they migrate upstream to spawn.

The weather was perfect for the fish, but terrible for photography it was one of the darkest days I remember meaning I not only had to shoot with very high ISO settings (up to 6400) but also open up the aperture far more than I would of liked just to try and get a fast enough shutter speed. None of it was good enough and coupled with the dull and flat light, the photos are not exactly what I was hoping for, but at least I got to spend 2 hours watching an amazing spectacle.

It’s quite hard watching these fish attempt time after time to clear the weir without any luck. Norbury Weir is quite long and as the water was only a few inches deep, the big fish struggle to get their powerful bodies in a forward momentum. This weir really needs modification to include a Fish Ladder such as the ones further downstream, but it seems this debate has been going on between the fishing clubs and land owners for quite sometime.

Automatically Back Up Lightroom Catalogues When You Logoff From Windows (Video)

If like me you have many different catalogues within Lightroom then you might get lazy when it comes to backing up your Lightroom Catalogues. As you may know, the catalogue stores all of the non-destructive editing carried out on your photos. Lose the catalogue and you lose the edits. Catalogues have to be stored locally and therefore is not easy to have them stored on resilent network storage such as a NAS.

I was getting concerned that I didn’t backup my catalogues often enough and decided to fix it once and for all and even turn off the backup notifications in Lightroom. I created a simple method to automatically backup any changes to my catalogues each time I log off or shut down my PC, please note, it doesn’t run if you just sleep or hibernate. As I’ve got an SSD in my PC it boots so quickly that I always shut it down when not using it.

Yes, this is important, I said “my PC”, I’m not a MAC user so this is not relevant to MACs but I suspect there is something similar available. Although I’m using Windows 10, this method should still work for 7 and 8. Please note, you require access to the Group Policy Editor, this is not available in “Home” versions of Windows and requires you are running a “Pro” version of Windows.

Vixen, Cub and the Other One

Here is some footage from Wednesday evening of the Vixen with her Cub and you’ll also notice right at the start another Fox in the background which is probably the other one we saw a few days ago.

Again, sorry for the odd crackling on the footage but it’s yet another Bushnell Camera to be returned, I’m now on the 4th camera since March and still getting issues. I also don’t think the quality is as good as the other 3 I’ve had to return.

Once this current bad weather passes, I’m going to attempt to get some colour video from my D7100 from within my hide.

Busy weekend for Fox action! Newcomer and a Cub!

It was a busy weekend with what seems to be a newcomer visiting. It’s certainly not the original Male as he a strange deformed/injured tail with the end missing. It doesn’t appear to be lactating so possible a different Male.

However, we also got another glimpse of a Fox cub on Sunday morning before running off after what I think is it’s parent.

Blink and you’ll miss, right at the beginning of this clip of the Vixen eating you’ll see a young Cub in the background.

This is great to finally see one. Of course, I don’t know if this is the only Cub but can only think that the Vixen is keeping them away from coming into the garden currently so hope for more footage soon.

Sorry about the bad audio quality, I’m having issues with the Bushnell Natureview Max HD (Colour) camera. I’m on my 4th replacement since March and still having issues!
