Serra Sunrise

Twighlight had just started when I set off this morning to a local ridge that I’d scouted yesterday. Setup the tripod and camera (D810, AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8 and “Cheap as Chips” Remote) with about 30 minutes until the sun was to appear above the serra ridges to the East.

I sat and watched a some stunning colours before the sun started to poke above the mountains and walked away with this shot.

In the foreground is my local village, São Marcos da Serra preparing for another warm October day.

Destination: Sunset

I was up on top of a ridge late this afternoon scouting for a possible sunrise location for tomorrow morning and turned to go back to the Quad and had this amazing view of the sunset ahead on the track and took this shot.

Sometimes, an opportunity comes your way when you are least expecting it.

The Bee Eaters have started to make a nest, but not so sure they are staying

Early this afternoon, the Bee Eaters (Abelharucos in Portuguese) were absent from around the house so I decided to take a quick look at their handy work and also quickly erect a pop-up hide.

I sat in the hide for a short while and a breeding pair turned up. They seemed a little nervous around the area, possibly with the hide there, but did visit a few times.

Only once did the male (I think it’s the male) go to the hole that they have started but then the pair flew away. It takes up to 20 days to build the nest so hopefully they will return to complete it. I have also left the hide in place for them to get used to it being there.

You can just about work out the start of the hole on the live view on the camera;

In the hide

I did manage to get this shot of one sitting in a nearby tree.

Frost in the Algarve?

Yes, believe it or not, the sunshine capital of Europe can get cold, particularly up in the Serra.

We’ve had a few cold nights recently, last night dipped below freezing and there was a good ground frost. However, as soon as the sun comes up, the frost instantly melts.

I was out just before sunset and walked down to the local Barragem (same location as the Sunset Reflection at the Barragem photo a few nights ago) to photograph the sunrise.

Sunset Reflection at the Barragem

I’ve been waiting for a perfectly still night and another fantastic red sunset to get down to a local “Bomberios Barragem” to get a reflection shot.

Here in the Serra (hills) of the Algarve you’ll find a lot of these man-made lakes (Bomberios Barregem translates to Firefighter Damn) which are used by fire trucks and helicopters to fill up with water in the event of a local forest fire.

This image is much better viewed on my Flickr Page

Algarve Serra Sunset

As the sun was starting to drop in the sky this afternoon, there was a slight haze appearing in the cloudless sky.

I had a hunch that this would be the start of a typical stunning Algarve sunset, so I headed for the hills.

I settled on top of a ridge with Monchique and Foia in the distance and waited for the sky to light up.

It didn’t disappoint!
